The Best Gameweek 13 Goalkeeper
Aaron Ramsdale (£4.8m)
Clean sheets haven’t come easy outside of the top clubs but Ramsdale, who we can still just about be classed as a budget option, looks to be filling that middle ground void. Defensively Arsenal have been suspect over their last four, despite two clean sheets but their battering at the hands of Liverpool would have skewed the numbers. Ramsdale has picked up saves bonus in 66% of his games which in turn benefits his bonus points potential when the Gunners keep a clean sheet. Opponents Newcastle rank third bottom for xG over the last with 4.01.
The Best Gameweek 13 Defenders
Reece James (£6.1m)
Chelsea’s wing-backs have become a fixture in these free hits and I don’t see any of them leaving until the other two title challengers are who they’re against. Man Utd is a great fixture at the moment, especially with Carrick still taking charge. Attacking returns and a clean sheet look on the cards this week and James is the standout choice with Chilwell out indefinitely.
Joao Cancelo (£6.5m)
Cancelo is yet another wing-back nailed into this team every week. He looks the closest you can get to being nailed in a Guardiola side in the backline. Only Chelsea boast a better xGC than Manchester City and like all attacking fullbacks in this XI, I can see them leaving the side unless they are playing each other.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m)
Trent continues to churn out the attacking returns and clean sheets and this triad of wingbacks should definitely feature in your free hit side. The most expensive defender has the most strings to his bow with his set-piece expertise being the differentiator compared to his wingback peers. Southampton have only scored more than one goal on two occasions this season and sit mid table for their attacking output.
The Best Gameweek 13 Midfielders
Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota (£13m and £7.6m)
Liverpool are the side with the easiest fixture from the league challengers this week, so a double up looks an easy choice. Surprisingly, Chelsea have been the most attacking side over the last four with Liverpool just about edging City over that period. Salah doesn’t need explanation and Jota at his price is a very easy choice with Firmino out injured. Mane is a player I’d also like to include but the extra funds required over the Portuguese isn’t worth it.
Conor Gallagher (£6.0m)
Palace are carrying nice momentum at the moment and it is translating in to FPL points for a number of their players, unlike previous years. Gallagher price is still very reasonable for a midfielder who has registered three big chances, the joint second most, over the last four. Visually he seems to be playing slightly more advanced and is entering the box on attacks. Aston Villa is a tricky opponent to call considering their limited data on their one game under Gerrard. However, it does look like he’s given them more defensive stability which is why I’m not going too heavy on Palace this week.
Emile Smith Rowe (£5.9m)
We’re getting blessed in the budget midfield range this season with a number of sub £6.0m options to help fund the heavy hitters at the back. Arsenal faces Howe’s Newcastle which defensively has a lot of work to turn around their issues. The attacker has been largely over performing his numbers and from watching the games you can see how clinical he has been with his chances. But I think he’s worth selecting when he has a kind fixture such as this week.
The Best Gameweek 13 Forwards
Harry Kane (£12.2m)
The lack of attacking options is really becoming apparent as the weeks go by as I struggle to pick these slots with confidence. Kane is in despite Spurs’ woeful form but his performance last weekend was much more promising and everyone would be clambering for him if his chance hit the back of the net rather than the post. Burnley have conceded the most amount of shots inside the box over the last four (50) and chances is all that Kane needs at the moment. Thursday night European football isn’t ideal for Spurs especially given their performance but Kane is like a dormant volcano, ready to explode at any moment, so leaving him out on a free hit will take some bottle.
Raúl Jiménez (£7.7m)
Despite Wolves’ attacking threat sitting in the bottom third of most metrics, I still think it’s worth picking their talisman against Norwich. Dean Smith’s first game was very solid and defensively Norwich didn’t concede a big chance and kept their xG to under 1. I wouldn’t read too much into this small sample size and I think Jimenez is a good bet for a single figure return.
Josh King (£5.6m)
Watford’s budget forward tops the charts for big chances over the last four games with a total of 7. It’s been quite a bleak spot upfront, so I don’t think it is wise to pump too much of your budget up here and at £5.6m he funds the rest of the XI nicely. Watford’s attack has been reenergised under Ranieri. Whether it is down to the fact he’s realised they can’t defend or the frontline are in the midst of a “new manager bounce,” I think it’s worth tapping into them this week and in the future with their fixtures turning. Leicester have been woeful at the back this season. The last time they kept a clean sheet was in Gameweek 1.
